Foundation Laid for Research Institute of Southeast University in Suzho
The ground breaking ceremony was held in the warm spring sunshine of Feb. 12 at Dushu Lake Higher Education Town for Research Institute of Southeast University in Suzhou, at which Wang Rong, Executive Member of CPC Jiangsu Provincial Committee and Secretary of CPC Suzhou Municipal Committee, together with Yi Hong, President of the university, shoveled earth to lay the ceremonial foundation. Mayor Yan Li of Suzhou expressed warm congratulations on the event on behalf of the Municipal Government. The ceremony signifies a new stage in the cooperation between Suzhou and universities. In the coming three years, the Research Institute of Southeast University will speed up the training of most needed talents in the economic and social construction of Suzhou. Enrollment of postgraduates will be somewhere around 500 per year, with major laboratories to be built in an effort to turn out more innovative type of talents. Also present at the ceremony were municipal leaders Wang Jinhua, Zhu Yongxin, and Tan Ying, etc.
Research Institute of Southeast University in Suzhou is be joint built by Suzhou Municipal Government and Southeast University according the agreement signed in 2005. The institute is defined as an education establishment combining modern research with talent training, and industrialization of research results as well as an open, internationalized, and research-oriented frontline application research base. The university entered Dushu Lake Higher Education Town in February 2006 to start teaching and research on leased facilities.
Since its entry in SIP, Southeast University has set up 4 departments and municipal-level laboratories, which function as practice base for the school’s postgraduates. The laboratories of electrical equipment and automation, in particular, have attracted many well-known enterprises for cooperation. The achievements in the major laboratories of wireless network and information security have already been adopted fro market development with satisfactory economic results.
Yi Hong, President of Southeast University, expressed in his speech at the ceremony that the cooperation between the university and Suzhou will open up bright prospect for scientific development, and the university will have an important role to play in Suzhou.
Careful planning was made by the higher education town for further growth of Research Institute of Southeast University in Suzhou. The institute, in the initial stage, will cover a land area of 100 mu, with a total of 56,000m2 floorage for buildings of Sino-foreign cooperation in education, research students training, graduate students teaching, research and laboratories, information center, and administration.
Mayor Yan Li said at the ceremony, "Southeast University is a comprehensive university with all-round capabilities in science, technology, medicine, liberal arts, management, economics, and law, with special emphasis in technology, and it enjoys high reputation in China and overseas for electronics, information, and software majors. The foundation laying is a milestone in the cooperation between Suzhou and tertiary institutions, with will undoubtedly speed up the integration of production, teaching, and research, the industrialization of research achievements, and the upgrading of the innovative capability of Suzhou." He required that Suzhou Industrial Park would do a good job in the construction and ensure logistic needs of the institute.
The institute will enroll 178 full-time postgraduates this year, and the mode of teaching will be that of double bases, that is, basic courses will be taught at the university HQ campus, and practice and dissertation will be completed at the institute. The institute will open up some dozen majors like information science and engineering, mechanical engineering, biological science, and medical engineering. In the next 3 years, the student body will grow to over 500 in addition to the 1,000 trainees for senior talents needed in the Yangtze delta region.
