Volunteers sell walnuts to help poverty-stricken children

More than 50 volunteers from Fireflies Volunteers Team launched a walnut selling campaign at CR Vanguard Square, Oudian Community, SIP, on Oct 29, in an effort to raise money for the poverty-stricken children at Qingyun Primary School in Weishan County, Southwest China's Yunnan province.

In the event, the volunteers, consisting of organization staff, private business owners, newly-minted graduates, teachers and children, worked hard to do their part. Some peddled across the square to solicit customers, while some sold the walnuts sourced from poverty-stricken families at the stall. Several volunteers distributed flyers to the passersby and explained in details the conditions of the primary school to the local residents, hoping people would lend the children a helping hand.

A total of 85 bags of walnuts were sold out on spot and 128 bags ordered within less than one hour, weighing 426 kilograms. According to the team leader, part of the earnings will be directly offered to the poverty-stricken families while the rest will be made part of the Fireflies Education Assistance Fund to support other projects for the school.
