Editor's Note:

Secretary Ma Minglong of Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) CPC Working Committee recently announced that SIP would integrate rising sectors with nanotechnology so as to build SIP into a leading nanotech industrial base in China and even in the world in five to ten years.
This is a decision made on the solid foundation of current achievements. On the basis of BioBay and Suzhou Institute of Nano-Tech and Nano-Bionics at Chinese Academy of Science (CAS), SIP has gathered a group of technological and industrial resources in the field, built the country's top technical platforms, recruited 2,000 professionals, and mastered a series of proprietary patents.
Nanometer, one billionth of a meter, is widely believed to have the strength of defining the future. Our serial reports will lead you into this world.

Having managed to get away from the extensive impact caused by the global financial crisis and being ready to embrace more opportunities, SIP found itself in an even more challenging situation with many strong competitors. The city of Wuxi becomes increasingly well-known for its Internet of Things, Taizhou leads in pharmaceutical business, while Nanjing is steadily promoting its software sector.
But more compelling pressure comes from Kunshan, a close neighbor of SIP. The LCD panel production continuously grows in Kunshan and the city gathers the country's top professionals and leading companies in nucleic acid industry. At the municipal working meeting held at the end of March, Kunshan Economic and Technological Development Zone was recognized as Suzhou's only industrial park with the size of over 400 billion yuan, while SIP belongs to the category of 300 billion yuan.  [more]

When the city of Wuxi finds its strength in the Internet of Things, Taizhou in bio-medicine, and Nanjing in software, Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) can feel the increasingly compelling pressure of identifying its unique advantage so as to ensure sustainable growth.
As a result, local decision-makers turned their eyes to nanotechnology. SIP CPC Working Committee held a meeting on May 13 and Secretary Ma Minglong chaired the discussion on how to promote nanotech sector in SIP. According to the resolution, SIP will give top priority to the development of nanotechnologies and the five-year development goal is to make SIP a world-renowned and the country's best nanotech innovation highland and industrial base.

Under the new situation, Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) started to upgrade its traditional industries and venture into rising sectors. As a result, a new industrial structure is taking shape by centering on nanotech and being composed of new energy, bio-medicine, unified communication, and creative industry.
Of all industries, why would SIP choose nanotech as the strategic industry?
Recognized as a national IT industry base in 2006, SIP grasped the chance when some multinational IT corporations and private enterprises decided to move their facilities to the places with more favorable investment environment. As a result, SIP has gathered a large number of companies in IT industry.

Nanometer, one billionth of a meter, is the distance that Suzhou Industrial Park determines to conquer so as to venture into a new field and to secure a sustainable future.
NanoGlobe, a world-class consultancy well-known among government agencies, research institutions, large global corporations, early-stage companies and investment firms, published an article on February 3 introducing Suzhou BioBay as the "Young and Progressive Nano-bio Incubator". In the closing paragraph, the reporter noticed that "Within just two and a half years since the opening of BioBay, the incubation units have filed over 300 patents (90% filed in China) including 40% of them from nanotech-related companies. Although the global economic condition is still tough, especially for the nanotech start-ups, it is very encouraging to know that the bio & nano start-ups such as Nano-Microbiological Technology Co. Ltd., BioNano Suzhou,

Suzhou Institute of Nano-Tech and Nano-Bionics (SINANO) joint founded by Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) and local government is located at 398 Ruoshui Road at Dushu Lake Sci-Edu Innovation Park and next to the complex of BioBay. In a sense, Ruoshui Road is the place where most nanotech companies gather in Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP).
The state-owned research institute equipped with the country's best facilities and enjoying numerous state, provincial, and municipal preferential policies is extremely attractive to high-end talents in the field. As of May 2010, the SINANO has 547 employees and the proportion of researchers, supporting staff, and management is 7:2:1. Among the professionals, 184 have PhD degrees and most have overseas education background.

At the mention of Vienna, you'll hear the sound of music; the mention of Venice brings to mind the city on canals; and the examples of cities with distinguishing industrial cultures include Detroit the Motor City and Bangalore the City of Software.
Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) decided to make nano-tech its strategic industry. Will this new city district be a City of Nano-Tech in the future?
SIP plans to invest 10 billion yuan in the next five years to promote the rapid development of nanotechnologies. The goal is to build research, education, incubation, and industrialization facilities with a total floor space of 2.5 million square meters so as to create a complete chain from R&D to production by attracting a total investment of 50 billion yuan.

In the 21st Century, it is universally acknowledged that the development of micro technology is stretched to the limit and replaced with nanotechnology as the dominant technology.
For years, Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) has been making solid progress in nanotech industry based on forward-looking layout. Up to now, SIP has been at the forefront of nanotechnology in China and made its presence felt in the world. The world is frequented drawn to the "Sound of Nano" from SIP.

Wan Gang unveiled the plaque of CHInano three years ago, when no one expected that ChInano would rise to the forefront of nanotechnology in China in a matter of three years.
After a lapse of three years, Wan Gang was excited to see the achievements attained by the two incubators. Before he left, he wrote down "Forge ahead and pursue excellence", which was a full appraisal and encouragement of SINANO as well as the high expectation for nanotechnology industry in Suzhou. ...[??]

Only in pursuit of breakthroughs in key and competitive industries can unique "know-how" be acquired in competition; only in concentration of resources and energies can heavy blows be landed.
The "fist" of developing nano-tech industry in Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) is now aggregating and presenting thrusts. In the Jiangsu Speeding-up the Development of New-emerging Industry Conference held in Nanjing on June 28, Mr. Yan Li, Mayor of Suzhou, said, "Suzhou will not repeat work in the fields others have explored, but mainly in the new-emerging industries with nano-tech as the breakthrough. In the future, when talking about nano-tech, people will invariably think of Suzhou."
       A "Nano-city " forges the future of SIP. [??]
