Shanghai-Nanjing Intercity Railway Approved on Principle

The Shanghai-Nanjing Intercity Railway, a project of much concern to citizens of Suzhou, has recently been approved on principle by National Development and Reform Commission. The planned rail will pass through six stops in Suzhou area. Meanwhile, there is likely to be another railway going through Suzhou from south to north.

According to relevant sources, the project of Shanghai-Nanjing Railway is being handled by National Development and Reform Commission, which has approved the project proposal. The railway starts from Shanghai, and passes through Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou, Zhenjiang, and reaches Nanjing, with a total distance of 296 kilometers in double tracks. The designed train speed will be 200 km/hr. The project will cost 22.4 billion yuan RMB.

The railway is listed in the "Yangtze Delta Intercity Railway Network Plan" as a main axis and a section of the Beijing-Shanghai Express Railway. Trains will be dispatched between Shanghai and Nanjing as commuter public transport. The project will not be implemented until the feasibility report is approved through examination and evaluation by the National Commission.

The Shanghai-Nanjing Intercity Railway is located between Shanghai-Nanjing Railway and Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway, running in parallel with 10 to 200 meters from one another. The six stops in the Suzhou area will be Wangting, SND(Xuguan), Suzhou, SIP, Weiting, Kunshan, and Lujiabang. Since the short interval between the future commuter trains will be only 3 minutes, traffic between Suzhou and Shanghai will be greatly improved and more and more citizens of Shanghai will opt to live in Suzhou.

At the recent "International Summit on China's Intercity Railways", a plan was drafted to build another railway from Changzhou to Jiaxing, passing rhrough Jiangyin, Zhangjiagang, and Suzhou, but the location is not ye finalized.
