Wen Jiabao Meets Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng
Wen Jiabao, Premier of the State Council, met Wong Kan Seng, Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore at Ziguang Hall, Zhongnahai, in Beijing on August 25.
Wen Jiabao says that the 3rd session of China-Singapore Joint Committee for Bilateral Cooperation was a successful meeting and has achieve positive results, that China and Singapore are close partners in economic and trade cooperation, and the bilateral trade comprises one fourth of China's trade with ASEAN. He says that Suzhou Industrial Park is playing an important role in promoting the exchanges in management and technological cooperation, and such a role should further enhanced. Wen says that China and Singapore have many fields in which they can complement each other, and they should not only strengthen their bilateral economic and trade cooperation, but unite their efforts in developing the international market and continuously expanding the fields of economic and trade cooperation.
Premier Wen Points out that the two side have reached consensus in starting negotiations on free trade zones of the two countries, and this is particularly significant to the deepening of the economic and trade cooperation between the two countries. China is assuming a positive stand in establishing China-Singapore free trade zone, and would like to start the negotiation with Singapore as soon as possible under the principle of equality, mutual benefit, and taking into consideration of each other's concerns. Wen hopes that China and Singapore will open to each other within the framework of the planned China-ASEAN free trade zones.
Wong Kan Seng agreed to Wen Jiabao's appraisal of the relations between the two countries, and expresses that the frequent visits between the leaders of the two countries, the active exchanges at all levels, the fruitful economic and trade cooperation, and especially the fast development of Suzhou Industrial Park, have set an example for future cooperation between the two countries, and that the start of negotiation on free trade zone will be beneficial to the deepening of such cooperation and to the negotiation on free trade zones between china and ASEAN. Wong expresses that Singapore will work close with China to push forward the good relations between the two countries.
Present at the meeting were Wu Dawei, Vice-minister of Foreign Affairs, and Ma Xiuhong, Vice-minister of Commerce.
