SIP Moon Bay Community Working Committee launched a program on Aug 18 to offer performances of traditional Chinese operas at Dushu Lake Resident Liaison Center on half-year basis for the residents to experience the charm and essence of the country's ancient theatrical art.

In the first event, two young performers staged Peony Pavilion, a repertoire of Chinese Kunqu opera which, originated in Suzhou in the 14th century, is known as one of the earliest genres of Chinese drama. Peony Pavilion, created by ancient dramatist Tang Xianzu in 1598, depicts a love story between a couple who finally get together after overcoming all difficulties transcending time and space. The performance made the audiences deeply moved.

After that, the performers gave the residents a detailed account of the origin, historical evolution and artistic features of the opera form and demonstrated its difference with Peking opera in rhythm and tone. This enhanced the residents' understanding of Kunqu opera.
