Xietang Sub-district recently saw a series of volunteer events to mark the Learn from Lei Feng Day, a national observance on Mar 5 every year to call on people to learn from the good deeds of Lei Feng (1940 to 1962), a People's Liberation Army (PLA) soldier characterized as a model of altruism.

In Heyun Community, the volunteers gave performances like songs, dances, farces and operas which enhanced the audiences' understanding of the spirit of volunteers as well as their willingness to carry it forward.

The event also incorporated volunteer services such as free clothes mending, haircut, home appliance repair, health consultancy, matchmaking, career assistance for women and lectures?on laws, designed to help solve the problems that bother the residents in their daily life.

In the event at Jintang Community on Mar 5, five barbers offered free haircut for the local senior residents.

In Songtan Community, some volunteers provided free clothes mending, haircut and blood pressure testing to the residents, while others offered advice on mental health, family relations and children education to the residents. The volunteers from Chefang Experimental Primary School organized a flea market that helped tighten the parent-child ties.
