Small integrated chip expected to help improve epidemic control efficiency

Suzhou Center for Disease Control & Prevention (SCDCP) and Harvard Weitz Innovation Hub (HWIH), a genetic technology and disease prevention research institute in SIP, jointly inaugurated the "Precise Disease Prevention Innovation Center" at Suzhou Key Project Promotion Conference on Oct 9, and unveiled the research outcomes on a small device for in situ epidemic pathogen testing.

HWIH was founded in 2017 by SIP Administrative Committee in collaboration with David A. Weitz, a member of the National Academy of Engineers of the United States and professor at Harvard University. The joint establishment by HWIH and SCDCP is expected to help facilitate the application of HWIH’s microfluidic technologies in prevention, control and treatment of infectious diseases.

"The device with a small microfluidic chip will be able to give the results of a series of on-site tests within minutes, while the traditional epidemic pathogen testing methods usually take a few days to identify that," said Zhan Yahui, a SCDCP member in charge of the cooperation project.
