At the 9th International Exhibition of Inventions (IEI) that was concluded recently, Portable Cellphone Charging Device Generated by Human Body Movement, a project submitted by SIP Industrial Technology School (SIPITS) students, stood out from over 3,000 candidates and won the gold award. Moreover, it also won the only "WIPO Special Prize", reportedly the most valuable grand prize of the event.

"Our body can be a generator," said Chen Jiaxin, core member of the project team and a student of electronics in the class of 2014, making a demonstration. In his hand was a white flat cuboid device and he shook it gently for a few seconds, then the voltage number of power showed on the screen.

According to Chen, there are a large number of steel balls in the device, and they roll and bump to the movement of human body, which changes the shape of the PZT sheet and generates power. The capacitance collects the weak electric energy until it is powerful enough, then the electric button inside the device will be turned on to charge the battery within. So we can generate power and charge battery as we walk or climb mountains.

Xie Liuwan, advisor of the project team, said, "Currently our test shows that every five-second movement of human body can generate about five volts. It seems negligible but long-time movement can accumulate considerable amount of electric energy, which is quite enough for emergency cellphone charging." He believed that they won the award because the project is an exploration into the area of new energy.

More than 3,000 projects from over 40 countries and regions, international organizations, various domestic provinces, cities, autonomous regions, PLA, universities, industry associations, etc. gathered at this year's IEI. Among others, SIPITS had a good harvest with 12 out of their 19 candidate projects winning prizes, including five gold awards, two silver awards and five bronze awards.
