A total of 53 scenes are used in the performance in order to portray the protagonist’s experiences over a period of 40 years.
The stage design is ingenious, especially the use of 16 movable columns to reflect the changes of moods of the protagonist, and the simple space design that is often seen in traditional Chinese opera performances.
A bus sign represents a bus stop, and a sofa represents a room. The columns move along different routes and at different speeds to echo the protagonist’s emotions at different moments.
What’s more notable is that there are plays in the play. The protagonist shifts into different roles in different Qinqiang performances she participates. Her interlaced roles in opera and real life makes the storyline compelling.
