People queue up to buy dongniangjiu

The Suzhou-style wine called “dongniangjiu”, a kind of sweet rice wine brewed with osmanthus flowers, is an essential drink for the Winter Solstice Festival meals. In mid-December, Suzhou natives who have waited for a year queue up in front of the wine shops to buy it with their own containers.

The wine is only on sale around the Winter Solstice Festival. It is made with fermented sticky rice and well-selected osmanthus flowers.

With low alcohol content, dongniangjiu is sweet and fragrant, and therefore is popular with people of all ages.
