SIP’s Shihui Community hosted an event on May 29 at the local activity center where 15 youngsters and their parents gained a good knowledge of a series of Chinese traditions.

A sinology teacher started the event, teaching the youngsters in traditional Chinese clothes a set of formalities in worshiping Confucius (551-479 BC), a Chinese philosopher widely known for his erudition and wisdom. Then he used a writing brush to paint a red dot on each youngster’s forehead, which is called “opening the wisdom eye”, and the children beat drums while speaking out loudly their dreams for the future.

Following that, several volunteers taught the youngsters and their parents to make sachets filled with medicinal herbs as a token of good wishes for the future. It is learnt that making sachets is a tradition to mark the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival which, reckoned on the fifth day of the fifth month on the Chinese lunar calendar, will fall on June 7 this year.
