SIP's Nanotech Industry Picks Up Fast Lane in 2011

Year 2011 witnesses rapid growth of five nanotech-focused rising sectors in Suzhou Industrial Park, namely, photoelectric new energy, bio-med, converged communications, ecological and environmental protection, and software and creative industries.

Faster Industrial Scale Growth
Suzhou Creative-Carbon Nanotechnology founded in early September is the first commercial carbon nanotube project in Jiangsu Province, engaged in the R&D, production, and sales of high-performance and cost-effective carbon nanotubes for military and civil uses. The management expects 12 million yuan sales in 2013. The official statistics show that the nanotech-related industrial output totaled at 4.7 billion yuan during the first nine months this year, a double growth in comparison with the same period of last year; and SIP registered 73 new nanotech innovation and commercialization projects, making the total number 167.

Meanwhile, more facilities are under construction, including Suzhou Nanopolis, SINANO phase-two complex, and nano-tech incubation base. Serving as the nanotech industrialization base in the city, Nanopolis is the first nanotech innovation facility to break ground at Sangtian Island in Innovation Park. Taking up 100 hectares land area with 1,540,000 square meters designed floor area (100,000 for phase-one facilities), Nanopolis is to be completed in June 2012 and will then be the leading nanotech industrial park in the country.

Richer Industrial Resources
Two more academic institutes were unveiled in SIP recently, USTC-UC Berkley Joint Nano Science and Technology Institute and Soochow University Nano Science and Technology College, aiming to produce mid-and high-level professionals. SIP nanotech training base relies on the resources of Suzhou Institute of Nano-Tech and Nano-Bionics (SINANO) at Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) and consists of three centers focusing on design, processing, and sealing technologies.

Apart from the talent pool, SIP also provides financial support to the sector and founded Qina Venture Capital, the first one dedicated to nanotech sector in the area. With registered capital of 50 million yuan, the Company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Suzhou Nano-Tech Development focusing on high-end quality nano projects at early or interim stage. Its mission is to gather in SIP a group of mature projects with promising market potentials.

SIP government also organizes a professional investment promotion team to identify and contract projects for BioBay and other facilities. The targets are R&D institutes and teams, projects with potentials, and quality businesses.

Stronger Industrial Platform Supports
Joining hands with Soopat the proprietary searching engine, SIP initiated online service of nanotech patent information platform, providing comprehensive information services of domestic and foreign nanotech patents, experts and professionals, patented technology trade, statistics, and communications.

The Standardization Administration of China (SAC) has recognized SIP as the country's only national pilot area of nanotech industrialization and standardization, which gives SIP the privilege of applying for national and industrial standards. As a result, SIP has got six nanotechnologies endorsed as national and industrial standards this year.

Jiangsu Province Nano Processing, Testing, and Analyzing Platform at SINANO provides to over 300 enterprises and research institutes a series of technical support, including nano flexible manufacturing, nano electrical and mechanical manufacturing, and nano photoelectrical manufacturing.
