“Beneath the Red Banner (Zheng Hong Qi Xia)”, an adaptation of revered Chinese writer and dramatist Lao She’s unfinished work by Beijing People’s Art Theatre (BPAT), was staged at Suzhou Culture and Arts Centre, SIP on Nov 19 and 20.

It is the first time for this modern drama to be performed outside Beijing, where the BPAT is based in, and the second BPAT work brought to Suzhou following “Thunderstorm (Lei Yu)”, which was staged at Kai Ming Theatre in 1999.

The work brings to life many typical scenes of Beijing in the late Qing Dynasty, reflecting the transformation and spirit of an era.

Before the performances, the crew, including Feng Yuanzheng, head of BPAT, and a number of famous artists, met with the audiences, sharing their understandings of the work and stories behind its creation.

“This is my first time in Suzhou with a stage play. I hope the audiences will like it,” said Feng.
