“The Floating House”, an artistic installation created by Beijing-based Drawing Architecture Studio (DAS), has caught the attention of many visitors to the Suzhou Olympic Sports Centre (SZOSC) Commercial Plaza in SIP. It is on display from Oct 26 to Nov 24.
The installation was created with 1,575 pieces of paperboard bonded by adhesive tapes and connected by nylon cords. It demonstrates a unique angle of view of traditional folk houses in Suzhou.
The work is the seventh of “The Productivity of Space” series of projects that Suzhou Museum of Contemporary Art launched in April for the purpose of “bringing contemporary art creation concepts and methods to every corner in the city of Suzhou”.
Li Han, an architect and founding partner of DAS, said the changing shapes of the work during its creation was like the evolution of traditional folk houses over time, which contained originality, fragility but also vitality.
“It is a fusion of memories and the modern life of the city,” Li said.
An academic seminar on the role of museums in urban development was held on the same day.
