“Meet Suzhou in Singapore” Culture Week facilitates Chinese-Singaporean cultural exchanges

The “Meet Suzhou in Singapore” Culture Week was held in Singapore from Apr 10 to 16 as one of a series of events designed to celebrate the 30th anniversary of SIP. The event has facilitated exchanges between the Chinese and Singaporean cultures.

The event incorporated the opening ceremony, a poetry and photography exhibition, art performances, a food festival and other components to showcase Suzhou to the participants in an all-around way.

Suzhou Ballet Theatre and Suzhou Kunqu Opera Theatre jointly gave a flash mob show with mixed ballet and Kunqu opera performances at Changi International Airport.

Suzhou Ballet Theatre later staged a new version of the classic ballet “Swan Lake” during the culture week, and Suzhou Kunqu Opera Theatre performed a new version of “The Peony Pavilion”, a classic episode of Kunqu opera, one of the oldest forms of Chinese opera.

The exhibition of 16 groups of works by Chinese and Singaporean poets and Suzhou-native photographers was held at Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay, showcasing the high-quality development of Suzhou to the visitors.

Other events were held to introduce the participants to Suzhou’s tourist attractions and folk art and customs, and “Suzhou Gardens in Six Chapters”, a documentary about the classical gardens of Suzhou, was shown.

Lee Sai Yong (Rong Zi), a Singaporean writer and chairwoman of Sing Health Medical who lives in SIP, shared with the participants her knowledge of and feelings about Suzhou.
