Nearly 40 volunteers from different walks of life began their services at Caoxieshan Archaeological Park in SIP on June 11, China’s Cultural and Natural Heritage Day which falls on the second Saturday of June each year, introducing the over 6,000-year-old Caoxieshan Site to the visitors.

Caoxieshan Site, a cultural heritage site located at the south bank of Yangcheng Lake, was discovered in 1956 and designated as a “major historical and cultural site protected at the national level” in 2013. Featuring Neolithic culture, it is hailed as “a center of prehistoric civilization at the Taihu Lake basin”, “the source of culture of the region south of the Yangtze River”, and “one of the sources of China’s rice farming culture”.

The building of the archaeological park was launched last year. So far, the core zone has been completed, with an area of about 40,000 square meters.

The volunteers were carefully selected and trained, and they will go through a series of tests and practices later to gain better skills for serving at the park.
