The name of SIP appeared in Xinwen Lianbo, a daily prime time news program produced by China Central Television (CCTV), on Mar 19 as a typical example for tech-driven industrial development in East China’s Jiangsu province.

The report revealed details about Gusu Lab, a laboratory founded in SIP last June for the purpose of driving development and innovation of material science.

With a total investment of RMB 20 billion, the 500-mu (about 33-hectare) lab plans to form a team of over 1,000 talents engaged in scientific research, technology or management and achieve a number of breakthroughs in basic theories and key core technologies of material science within a period of about five years, and strive to finish the building of a team with 3,000 key staff and become a world-class material science lab by 2030.

SIP has been a pacesetter in the country’s reform and opening-up, and a forerunner for science and technology innovation in Jiangsu province. It is home to a large number of enterprises and research organizations engaged in high-tech sectors, and their outcomes have offered great support for local industrial development.

SIP authorities unveiled a series of new plans early this year to enhance support for science and technology innovation projects in such fields as biomedicine, new materials and modern services, aiming to make technology a stronger driver for local economic growth.
