The Xu Jing’s Contemporary Calligraphy Exhibition themed “Break the Boundaries” opened at Suzhou Eslite Bookstore, SIP on Apr 20, and will last till June 16.
The exhibition is the biggest ever solo exhibition of Xu Jing in Chinese mainland. The Jiangsu-native calligrapher is widely known for her ingenious fusion of traditional handwriting skills and contemporary art forms. Xu wrote works for films by Zhang Yimou, Peter Chan and Gu Xiaogang and the dance piece “Rite of Spring” choreographed and performed by Yang Liping.
In addition to calligraphy works, the exhibition incorporated audio-visual works and installations created by Xu.
The calligrapher showed up at the eslite FORUM on the same day, sharing her views on the aesthetic nature and modern expression of traditional Chinese calligraphy and discussing with famous actress Hai Qing about the feasibility of integrating calligraphy with other forms of art.
