SIP’s Shengpu Sub-district has adopted an innovative grassroots governance mode under which pupils and their parents are encouraged to serve as volunteers to help with the local grid-based governance.
Under the grid-based governance, the district is divided into a number of grids with designated personnel working to improve grassroots governance, and volunteers who serve under the mechanism can accumulate the “Red Steward Points” to exchange for daily necessities. Statistics show that so far 3,645 volunteers have accumulated 678,146.9 points in total by participating in the governance of the grids and used 576,390 of them.
Based on that, the sub-district has supported several local primary schools to carry out the “Red Star Card” collection campaign where pupils and their parents can volunteer to help with the grid governance and thereby collect the “Red Star Cards” that can be exchanged for the “Red Steward Points” or vice versa. This has encouraged many youngsters and their families to take part in various actions and campaigns for grid governance, like conducting safety inspections and supervising waste sorting.
