SIP sees significantly improved environment following years of endeavors

SIP now looks much more charming than it was five years ago. Its constant efforts to pursue eco-friendly development have paid off.

Tens of thousands of birds in over 20 species lived in the Yangcheng Lake area last winter, including Aythya baeri (or Baer’s pochard) ducks, one of the world’s rarest and endangered duck species.

Last year, SIP’s PM2.5 concentration was 26.7 micrograms per cubic meter, down 33.3% than in 2017; the days with fine and good air quality accounted for 82.5%, up 15.7 percentage points than in 2017; and the quality of all the water in the drinking water sources in SIP reached the set standard, so did the quality of water covered by the provincial water quality monitoring network.

The achievements stem from a series of measures that have been implemented for years to control pollution to water, air and soil. Strict law enforcement, frequent publicity campaigns and considerate assistance for enterprises to shift to eco-friendly operations all count.

These efforts have allowed a sewage treatment plant on the bank of Wusong River to transform into an “eco-park” with artificial wetlands, and the local energy consumption to decline to 0.16 ton of standard coal equivalent per 10,000 yuan of GDP and carbon dioxide emission to reduce to 0.42 ton per 10,000 yuan of GDP in 2021.

Last year, 20 enterprises with operations involving exhaust emission finished upgrading to more eco-friendly models, and 452 enterprises reduced emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by 213.6 tons.
