China-Japan Version of The Peony Pavilion Presented on March 13 in Suzhou


China-Japan Version of The Peony Pavilion starring and directed by famed Japanese Kabuki master Tamasaburo Bando was presented at Suzhou Science and Cultural Arts Centre on March 13.

… After the performance of last year and year-long continuous polishing, Tamasaburo Bando presented a more delicate interpretation of the leading role Du Liniang, and his cooperation with Yu Jiulin was extremely harmonious. The audience applauded his singing and speaking, his beautifully waving of the long sleeves and elegant postures…

 

 

…During the performance, applauses burst out every now and then and the cast answered the curtain call three times after the show. Many spectators said it was so rare for a foreigner who had never learned Chinese or Kunqu before the project to give such an excellent performance. Kunqu opera expert Gu Duhuang also highly praised Tamasaburo at the rehearsal several days ago, "He strictly sticks to the tradition of Kunqu art." Pan Zhenzhou also acknowledged the efforts of the Japanese Kabuki master after the show: "this is a show of special significance in the history of Kunqu opera"…
