Shengpu Holds a Singing Contest to Promote Traditional Legacy of Folk Songs

On the evening of May 22, Shengpu Town of Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) celebrated the 15th anniversary of SIP by organizing the 1st Local Folk Song Competition. Local citizens crowded the activity center and relived the old-fashioned life along with the familiar melodies. Among the total of 21 local singers at the contest, there were housewives in their thirties and 70-year-old grandpas.

In June 2007, the People's Government of Suzhou Municipality announced the Third Batch of Intangible Cultural Heritage; the traditional dress and accessories for women, the Xuanjuan art (a local folk art of telling stories by singing and speaking), and the local folk songs, namely the "Three Treasures of Shengpu Town", are on this list. The singing competition was held to publicize the traditional legacy and to find talented local singers.
