Suzhou Municipal Government Holds Symposium on Transition of SZ and SIP in Singapore
Suzhou Municipal Government held on July 8 a briefing on the transition of Suzhou and Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) at Singapore Shangri-La Hotel. The local and Singaporean officials signed the agreement on in-depth cooperation in modern services, HR training, and ecological and environmental protection. At the meeting, 34 new projects with a total value of 1.6 billion US dollars were signed.

The participants included Minister Lee Yi Shyan of Trade and Industry in Singapore, Secretary Jiang Hongkun of CPC Suzhou Municipal Committee, Ambassador Wei Wei of China to Singapore, Mayor Yan Li of Suzhou, other officials from Suzhou Municipal Government and Singapore authorities, as well as the members of Bi-Lateral Working Committee, the representatives of Singapore consortium, the directors, supervisors, and top executives of China-Singapore SIP Development Company (CSSD), the representatives of multinational companies based in Singapore, the businessmen in Singapore, and entrepreneurs from Suzhou.

Secretary Jiang Hongkun said at his opening speech that Singapore was one of the most important finance, service, and navigation centers in Asia and had obtained widely recognized achievements in technological innovations and environmental protection. To build Suzhou into a pilot area featuring integrated urban and rural development on the basis of scientific outlook and innovations, as well as a city with high-end industries, beautiful ecological environment, and traditional culture and modern civilization, the local Party leader believed that new industries, new districts, and leading professionals were the key factors. He also hoped that Suzhou would learn more proven practices from Singapore and that the mutually beneficial cooperation would create brighter future for both parties.

Minister Lee Yi Shyan said the trade between Singapore and Suzhou accounted for half of that between the country and Jiangsu Province and that both countries had benefited a lot from the cooperation project of SIP. He hoped that future cooperation projects would focus on three fields of modern services, technological innovations, and talent production.

Mayor Yan Li of Suzhou delivered the keynote speech on Mutual Benefits through Harmonious Cooperation, introducing the latest achievements that SIP had obtained. According to the statistics he cited, there are at present a total of 1,200 projects that Singapore has invested in Suzhou with the paid-up foreign capital of 6 billion US dollars. These cooperation projects cover extensive fields of trade, culture, education, and technology. He pointed out that both Suzhou and SIP offered great business potentials during the process of promoting new industries, building new districts, and gathering top-end talents. The mayor also believed that both parties would benefit from the cooperation in modern service, city construction, technological innovation, rising industries, SOE projects, environmental protection, and talent training.

At the meeting, Suzhou and Singapore authorities signed 34 contracts with a total value of 1.6 billion US dollars on the cooperation of finance, technology, tourism, logistics, and outsourcing. SIP authorities signed cooperation agreements with National University of Singapore, Singapore Exchange, Singapore Nano-Tech Association, ProLogis, and China Energy Conservation Investment Corporation (CECIC), while Zhangjiagang, Kunshan, Taicang, and Xiangcheng cities signed contracts with MWH Singapore and PH Hydraulic Engineering.
