       Taking a walk toward south along Xinghu Street in Suzhou Industrial Park, you will see a sculpture of two arches. The sculpture "Rising" is one of the landmarks of Dushu Lake Education Innovation Park, and another is the world's most famous equation E=mc2, which sums up its success story based on knowledge.
     Starting as a district of graduate schools a decade ago and then a Higher Education Town, Dushu Lake Education Innovation Park has grown fast. There used to be a wide-spread saying among locals, if you want to do business, go to Jinji Lake; if you want to find a good school, go to Dushu Lake. Today, knowledge-based economy has become a new trademark at Dushu and it therefore gets a new name, the Oriental Wisdom Lake.

A Decade Review of Dushu Lake Education Innovation Park

Covering ten square kilometers and founded in August 2002, Dushu Lake Education Innovation Park in Suzhou Industrial Park has created several records during past decade, including the country's only sino-foreign university offering academic degree to graduates, the first sino-foreign research institute, the first specialized national college science park, the first pilot zone of nano-tech industrial standardization and of nano-tech industrial standardization, and with the most Global Experts recognized by the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee. Executive President Youmin Xi of Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University once named the place the "Oriental Wisdom Lake".

University of Science and Technology of China is the first opening graduate school at Dushu Lake and followed by Soochow University, Renmin University of China, Nanjing University, Wuhan University, and Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. There are at present 23 higher education institutions here with staff, faculties, and students totaling 78,000.

Through Suzhou Institute of Nano-Tech and Nano-Bionics (SINANO) at Chinese Academy of Science (CAS), Leading Technical Talent Pioneering Program, and Jinji Lake Double Hundred Talents Program, the Education Innovation Park manages to gather 14 academicians, 37 Global Experts, 57 National Outstanding Young Persons, Chang Jiang Scholars, and CAS 100 Talents, and 1,400 professionals with overseas experiences.

Among 40,000 working at the Education Innovation Park, one fourth of them are masters and 80% have at least bachelor degree. Its Global Experts account for 46% of the city's total, and the talents recognized by provincial and municipal authorities take up 50% and 60% of the city's totals.

Thanks to the influence of SINANO founded in 2006, there are at present 119 nano-tech enterprises and R&D institutions at Dushu Lake Education Innovation Park, producing total output of 1.732 billion yuan in 2011 and registering an average annual growth of 40%. With nano optoelectronics, nano bio-med, and nano materials gradually taking shape, it has become the third national Nano-Tech Innovation Park and the biggest nano-tech R&D and industrialization base in the country.

Among 1,542 innovation-oriented companies based at the Park, 170 are R&D centers recognized by at least municipal authority. The total number of patents applied records 8,962 and 74% are invention patents. The total number of registered patents is 2,580 and 593 are invention patents. 800 projects have been listed as national 863 and 973 and provincial key programs.

The development of strategic rising sectors indicates the vitality and potentials of Dushu Lake Education Innovation Park. Converged communications, bio-med, software, animation and gaming also make considerable contributions to local economy. There are 50 converged communications companies with output of 10 million yuan and 246 innovation-based bio-med enterprises. Software and animation & gaming registered total sales of 10 billion yuan last year. As a result, the Park becomes software industry base of National Torch Program and National Gaming Industry Base.

To promote cultural diversity, local authorities built Dushu Lake Church, opened Suzhou Pingtan School, and introduced Cold Spring Harbor (CSH) Asia Conferences, hosting 26 international academic activities with 5,000 scientists and bio-med executives from 40 countries, including four Nobel Prize winners and 150 academicians.

The infrastructure and supporting facilities at Dushu Lake Education Innovation Park include public library, stadium, theater and cinema, students' canteen, neighborhood center, shopping street, kindergarten, primary school, residential community, apartments, and parks.
