To commemorate the centenary of the 1911 Revolution, a democratic revolution led by Dr. Sun Yat-sen that overthrew the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and founded the Republic of China in 1912, Ms. Sun Suifong donated a bronze statue of her grandfather to Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) on September 20.
The 1.9-meter-tall statue was erected to the southeast corner of Jichulou Building. Holding a book in one hand and a walking stick in another, the founding father of the Republic of China is looking ahead solemnly. The statue stands on 1.6-meter three-level black granite pedestal. The eight words on each side of the octagonal bottom base read "Loyalty, Filial Piety, Humanity, Love, Faithfulness, Righteousness, Peace, and Harmony",,which represent the moral values advocated by Dr. Sun. The inscriptions in the middle are "the world belongs to all" and "the moralities precede the countries and the world". On top of the status base, there are the quotes from "Great Learning" in The Book of Rites, one of the Chinese Five Classics of the Confucian canon, "Investigating Things", "Extending Knowledge", "Being Sincere in Thoughts", "Rectifying Hearts", "Cultivating Personality", "Regulating Family", and "Governing the State Rightly", which are valuable teachings for college students. |
