The 7th Suzhou Showdown white collar boxing competition took place in Suzhou Center, SIP on Dec 7 when boxing enthusiasts from China, the United Kingdom, Austria, the United States, France and Italy, competed in five groups. The event helped raise RMB 65,000 on site for patients with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), a genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscle degeneration and weakness.

Initiated by Goran Martinovic, a former member of the Croatian national boxing team who started to run a boxing club in SIP in 2016, Suzhou Showdown was first held on a yearly basis and then twice a year after Goran Martinovic entered cooperation with SIP-based Mother Tang Charity Center in 2018 in good causes. It was for the first time this year that the event was free to the public.
“We hope people interested in boxing can have the chance to watch the games on site,” Goran Martinovic said.

The event featured rivalries between Chinese and foreign contestants, and the youngest “boxer” is only nine years old.

Tang Chongyan, founder of Mother Tang Charity Center, gave an introduction to DMD at the event. According to her, Suzhou now has over 50 families with DMD patients, and the money collected at the Showdown events are used to buy devices that can help improve the patients’ life quality.
Also, a QR code was provided at the event for people to get access to an online platform to make their donations.
