Prof. Shi Bin, dean of Nanjing University (Suzhou) High-tech Research Institute in SIP, and his team garnered a gold award at the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva held in Switzerland from Apr 10 to 14 for their latest invention, a measurement system for in-situ soil moisture content monitoring based on distributed optical-fiber heating technology.

It is reported that Shi and his colleagues had worked on the system for four years before making it perfect. Compared with conventional soil moisture content measurement devices, the system can support wider and deeper soil monitoring operations and generate more accurate data. Therefore, it is a good option for soil conservation, geological disaster prevention and control, and agricultural production. According to the research team, the system is already in use in a landslide control project in Central China’s Hubei province.
