Suzhou Institute of Systems Medicine (ISM), a research facility jointly erected by Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Suzhou government and SIP authorities, has set a good example for integrated talent, industrial and urban development.

According to Dr. Cheng Genhong, director of ISM and a professor in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics at University of California, Los Angeles, he and his increasingly expanding team worked for six years from 2012 to 2018 to make preparations for the opening of ISM. Cheng said, without the team, ISM could not exist, while ISM provides opportunities for the team members to give full play to their expertise.

ISM has been striving to integrate into the local industrial ecosystem since it was inaugurated last October. Focusing on neoplastic, immunological and metabolic diseases, it is taking a series of actions to facilitate cooperation in the fields. In one example, thanks to its efforts, Sanofi, a French multinational pharmaceutical company, signed an agreement with SIP Administrative Committee last year to set up its fourth Global Research Center worldwide in SIP for discovery and development of drugs against the abovementioned diseases.

On the other hand, ISM is working on building a clinical trial unit in SIP to help accelerate development and use of new drugs. In this way, it is helping perfect the local drug development and medical service chains.
