Various events to mark Winter Solstice Festival
Communities at Hudong sub-district recently organized a variety of events to mark the Winter Solstice Festival, which, the 22nd of 24 Chinese Solar Terms, falls on Dec 22 this year.
Lanxi Community hosted a party on Dec 21. Li Gang, a famous host of a local on-line TV show, presided over the event and shared delicious food with the participants. Li also made live Internet broadcast about the event, introduced the folk customs in his hometown and taught the participants Suzhou dialect.
In some communities, such as Linrui and Aoyun communities, the residents made rice glue balls (small dumpling balls made of glutinous rice flour with sweet fillings), which people in South China like to eat on the festival, while in some other communities, such as Donghu Chunyun and Fangyue communities, the residents made Chinese dumplings together.
The property management company at Fengqing Shui'an Community presented warm sweet water made of brown sugar and shredded ginger to the local residents, as a way to celebrate the festival.
Hupan Tiancheng Community hosted a party on Dec 19. The residents shared the dishes they made and spent several happy hours together.
Seven volunteers in Oudian Community made dumplings for the "empty-nest" elderlies (seniors whose children live and work in other places) and the handicapped.
