SIPDLS builds STEM education base

In the training of innovative talents, it is essential to adopt modern teaching philosophy and satisfy individualized development and selective learning.

SIP Dushu Lake School (SIPDLS) STEM Education Base was officially inaugurated on Dec 19. Shanghai STEM Cloud Center, Jiangsu Province Youth Science and Technology Association and STEM XJTLU Kechuang Development Research Institute will jointly build the science and technology education platform for SIPDLS, provide education resources and guide the school's STEM courses.

As introduced by Zhang Yizhong, director of Shanghai STEM Cloud Center, STEM education is the integrated education of four specific disciplines, i.e. science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Aiming at designing and exploring, STEM is meant to carry out scientific inquiry into technical problems through an interdisciplinary approach.

Rather than teach the four disciplines as separate and discrete subjects, STEM integrates them into a cohesive learning paradigm based on real-world applications.

According to Zhu Hongwei, principal of SIPDLS, STEM education attaches importance to application, practice, discipline integration and all-round ability; it is the orientation of talent training in the age of knowledge-based economy and the trend for education development.

Two years ago, the school introduced STEM experiment courses represented by nano technology and made beneficial explorations; in the future, the school will make use of the STEM course platform to deepen curriculum reform in a bid to bring its seventh grade students brand new learning experience.
