Lakeside Forum, a Cultural "Gem" by Dushu Lake

Based at Dushu Lake Science & Education Innovation District in Suzhou Industrial Park, Lakeside Forum is a platform of academic and cultural exchanges aiming at "sharing wisdom and creating values". Focusing on four themes of academy, culture, business, and politics, it has launched 85 sessions, invited over 100 speakers, and attracted nearly 30,000 audiences. With the recommendation of the municipal publicity department, it was named "Excellent Forum in Jiangsu Province" in 2012.

Inviting accomplished professionals as speakers
All the speakers at Lakeside Forum are accomplished figures in their respective specialties and the topics discussed have been forward-looking and perspective. Connecting the eastern and the Western cultures is another focus. Nobel laureates and academicians introduce their latest theories, ideas, and thoughts to local audience, helping to create an international academic atmosphere by Dushu Lake.

Making Lakeside Forum a culture brand
"
In its early days, Lakeside Forum mainly served college teachers and students," said Director Zou Qun of University and College Department at Suzhou Dushu Lake Science & Education Development. "Then it went out of the district and SIP, reaching out to more people, such as public servants, retired workers, and foreigners." To make full use of local resources, it cooperates with research institutes and companies to enrich the content of lectures and to give its partners a stage to present their strengths as well.

The organizer also manages to make the events more attractive to audience through diverse presentation forms of theme lecture, host-guest discussion, Q&A, speaker-audience interaction, and exhibition. In order for the audience to have a say on the program, the forum also has a feedback channel to collect opinions and proposals from audience.

Forging partnership and reaching out to more people
With more and more prestigious universities opening branches here, including University of Science and Technology of China, Nanjing University, Renmin University of China, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, National University of Singapore, University of California at Los Angeles, and University of Dayton, Dushu Lake Science & Education Innovation District has taken yet another step closer to be an international education community.

Among 80,000 people teaching and learning in the district, 4% are expats and they also find Lakeside Forum a good place to absorb new ideas and global perspectives.

In 2015, Lakeside Forum is to join hands for the first time with Dushu Lake Chinese & Foreign Culture Carnival, another brand program in the district. The goal is to introduce traditional Chinese and local culture to foreign students and expats.

"The cooperation is in accordance with our philosophy of going global," said Zou Qun. "We'll infuse more cultural elements to our future events. By creating an open, free, and inclusive academic and cultural exchange space, we'll make Lakeside Forum a high-end culture brand in SIP and in Suzhou."
