SIP Catholic Church Gives First Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve
On the evening of December 24, more than 1,000 Catholics in Suzhou Industrial Park gathered at the church on the south bank of Yangcheng Lake for the first midnight mass since its opening.
Breaking ground on May 28, 2011 and completed on December 3, 2014, the church also houses the Catholic Diocese of Suzhou. Xu Honggen, bishop of the diocese, introduced that the building in Gothic style occupied total premises of 1.2 hectares and construction area of 5,600 square meters. The facade of the country's tallest Catholic Church features local architectural elements of whitewashed wall and black roof-tiles.
There are two halls available for praying, a big one on the second floor with 1,000 seats and a smaller one on the ground floor for 200 people. The mass scheduled at eight o'clock on weekend is in Chinese and the one starting at ten thirty is in English.
