Spring Festival exhibition kicks off at Suzhou Eslite Bookstore

Suzhou Eslite Bookstore, a branch of Taiwan-headquartered retail bookstore chain Eslite Bookstore, and Echo of Things Chinese, a Taiwan-based magazine devoted to collecting and preserving traditional Chinese folk culture and crafts, jointly kicked off the “Celebration of the Year of the Rat” Spring Festival Exhibition at Suzhou Eslite Bookstore on Jan 12. Scheduled to last till March 1, the event is offering the visitors a good chance to acquire a better understanding of the culture related to Chinese Spring Festival. 
 
This year is the Year of the Rat according to the Chinese Zodiac which, based on Chinese lunar calendar, is a 12-year cycle with a symbolic animal sign in each year. The Chinese Spring Festival is the Chinese New Year to celebrate the beginning of a new year on the Chinese lunar calendar. It will fall on Jan 25 this year.
 
Among the exhibits are artworks such as couplets, paper-cuts and woodcut prints that are often used as decorations during the Spring Festival, nursery rhymes, toys that remind different generations of their childhood, and pictures and texts depicting stories and traditions related to the Year of the Rat. Besides, the event includes lantern riddles, fireworks and opportunities for the visitors to make their wishes for the new year.
 
Yongsong Huang, a co-founder of Echo of Things Chinese showed up at the event on the opening day, giving a talk on the Chinese Spring Festival culture and introduced the magazine’s new poster book Celebration of the Year of the Rat to the participants.
