SIP Moon Bay Community Working Committee hosted an event at Shandong University (Suzhou) Research Institute, SIP on Aug 24, offering the participating residents a good chance to know better about pingtan (storytelling and ballad singing in Suzhou dialect).

 

It is reported that the committee launched a program last year to host an event of similar kind every half a year to invite professional performers to give local residents performances of traditional Chinese operas, impart knowledge on the operas to them and teach them simple performance skills. The committee hopes the program can help enhance the participants’ understanding of traditional Chinese art and culture.

At the event, Lu Yanmei and Jin Huiling, both renowned pingtan performers, gave the participants a specific introduction to the historical evolution of the centuries-old art form, and staged a list of performances to demonstrate the differences between different pingtan genres.
