The Working Committee for the Care of the Next Generation at SIP’s Sijixin Community organized an event on July 8, offering a number of local children and their parents a good chance to learn more about Chinese shadow puppetry which, a form of theatre acted by colorful leather or paper silhouette figures to the accompaniment of music and singing, was included in the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage list in 2011.

In the event, a Chinese expert on Chinese shadow puppetry gave the participants a specific introduction to the over-2,000-year traditional opera genre before giving them a performance of a classic episode adapted from “Journey to the West”, a great Chinese mythological novel published in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), and teaching the kids to operate the silhouette figures.
The event not only aroused the children’s interest in Chinese shadow puppetry, but also increased their knowledge on traditional Chinese culture.
