Gu Yuqiao, a fifth grader at SIP Xinghai Primary School, was recently declared one of 48 winners in the Global Chinese Poetry Contest themed "Nostalgia for Poetic Zhouzhuang". Her award-winning works, two poems about Zhouzhuang, a widely sought-after tourist destination near Suzhou, will be published home and abroad along with the other winners' works.

It is learnt that the contest, sponsored by Chinese Poetry Network together with several poetry research organizations and literary magazines, received nearly 40,000 works from over 15,000 domestic and overseas participants, including many already with great attainments in poetry. Gu is the youngest and the only pupil winner.

According to Liu Quanmin, Gu's Chinese teacher and vice principal of Xinghai, the girl has won a long list of awards and honors in various writing contests. Liu believes that is much related with the school's consistent efforts to encourage its students to read and recite classic literary works.
