At the recent "Dew White" Contemporary Art Exhibition held at Suzhou Center, SIP, the artwork bearing K'o-ssu (a traditional technique in Chinese silk tapestry, admired for its lightness and clarity of pattern) pattern became an eye-catcher. It is a joint work by Hu Xingjian, Qiu Yundan and Zuo Annan, three students who are studying industrial design and architecture at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU).
The students revealed that they employed computer programming techniques to imitate K'o-ssu texture in different color zones and make it a modern artwork featuring classical beauty.
They said their idea came from their experience of learning K'o-ssu skills from a local K'o-ssu expert in the summer.
"The traditional craftsmanship is amazing, and we are trying to use computer graphics techniques to help K'o-ssu makers preview the effects of their designs for higher working efficiency," Hu said.
