Weiting Sub-district recently saw a series of events to celebrate the Chinese Lantern Festival, which, reckoned on the fifteenth day of the first month on the Chinese lunar calendar, fell on Mar 2 this year.

At Qingjianhu Community, a local opera troupe performed episodes of traditional operas, covering Shanghai Opera, Shaoxing opera (also known as Yue Opera) and Wuxi Opera, drawing warm applause from the audiences.

In the event in Xihu Community on Mar 2, the community staff and a group of elderly volunteers spent several happy hours together with 70 children in Senlinhu Kindergarten. They explained in detail the origin of the Chinese Lantern Festival and related traditional customs to them and cooked rice glue balls (small dumpling balls made of glutinous rice flour with sweet fillings) for them.

Putian Community hosted a lantern riddle guessing event on Mar 1, when nearly 100 residents racked their brains to figure out the answers to the riddles and those with the right answers received gifts.
