The pot of miniaturized rock landscape is a big element when Xiang Jiade, a 65-year-old local of Suzhou, decorated his apartment. From the hallway to living room and then the balcony, the such pots are everywhere.

When he was a kid, Xiang liked to go to local gardens and found the rockwork fascinating. When he was in his 30s during the 1980s, he created his first work in char. "Char is hard enough but you can also easily get the shapes you want." When this became a real hobby, Xiang started to collect rocks for his creation.

In addition to rocks of various shapes, Xiang also used toothpicks, kitchen foil, and wood chips to make decorations. "Ideas are important and details are equally important," he said. With bridges, pavilions, and woodcutters, the otherwise piles of rocks become mountains. "Finishing a piece of work gives me the greatest satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment."
