SIP ICV Testing Zone, a zone for testing of intelligent connected vehicles (ICVs) in SIP’s Suzhou AI Industry Park, partly came into service on Oct 11. It is the first project of its kind in East China’s Jiangsu province.

“The project will be carried out in three phases, and the completed part covers roads along with 15 intersections that are totally 8.8 kilometers long. The roads are equipped with smart traffic devices, testing equipment, geographic information systems, comprehensive control platform and 5G-based communication systems to allow multi-scenario testing of self-driving vehicles and automatic driving technologies,” a source close to the project disclosed.

At the inauguration ceremony, the Department of Industry and Information Technology of Jiangsu Province issued qualification certificate to SIP ICV Testing Zone, while Suzhou Public Security Bureau issued license plates to Chinese ride-hailing giant Didi Chuxing for its vehicles to be tested. Besides, the event saw the signing of several agreements for strategic cooperation in the development and operation of the zone.

After the inauguration ceremony, a group of people including experts on automatic driving and enterprise representatives discussed opportunities and challenges in the ICV sector, and several vehicle developers and related service suppliers demonstrated their smart driving technologies to the event’s participants at the zone.

SIP authorities revealed that they are counting on the zone to form an industrial ecosystem for development of ICVs.
