At the 34th China Adolescents Science and Technology Contest (CASTIC) concluded in Macao on July 25, Kuang Zi’ao, Chen Yuxin and Yu Zhangyuan, three students from SIP-based Suzhou High School Affiliated to Xi’an Jiaotong University, scooped three awards with their “iCrab”, a robotic device used to catch sea cucumbers.
It is learnt that over 1,600 adolescents and their tutors from China and other 52 countries and regions competed in the event co-sponsored by China Association for Science and Technology, several Chinese ministries and commissions and the government of the Macao Special Administrative Region. The students from SIP received the first prize for Innovative Science and Technology Projects, the Mao Yisheng Prominent Science and Technology Award and the award for Top 10 Best-loved Exhibition Booths.
iCrab features a mechanical arm of two parallelogram structures and a gripper used to catch sea cucumbers underwater.
“We plan to link it with cameras installed on the fishing boat bottom for fishermen to monitor the whole process when it works underwater, and we will also try to add a smart identification module to it so that it can automatically detect sea cucumbers without human operations,” Kuang said when talking about their future plans concerning the device.
