Suzhou Science and Technology Bureau (SZSTB) recently released the list of soft science research projects it has decided to subsidize. Dr. Christian Nolf, program director of MSc Urban Design and co-director of Research Institute of Urbanization at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), and Dr. Thijs Kouwenhoven, an associate professor at Department of Mathematical Sciences at the school, are the only two expatriates on the list.

SZSTB runs the soft science research supporting program on a yearly basis to give a helping hand to projects focusing on study of human behaviors, interactions, thoughts and feelings to provide basis for decision-making concerning local economic and social development.

It is learnt that Dr. Christian Nolf and his team will dedicate to study on application of slow travel (a style of travel about getting to know one place well and connecting with a place and its people) strategies for sustainable development of ancient Suzhou city, while Dr. Thijs Kouwenhoven's team will be engaged in research of low birthrate's impact on Suzhou's economic and social development.
