One day before the 30th Teachers' Day, Suzhou Industrial Park government called a working conference on education on September 9 to review the two-decade achievements and assign new tasks. The authorities awarded a group of units, teachers, and educators. Jiangsu Union Technical Institute (SIP), SIP Open University, SIP Education Society, and SIP Private Education Society unveiled their plaques at the meeting.

Yang Zhiping, Deputy Secretary of CPC SIP Working Committee and Director of SIP Administrative Committee, reviewed achivements in the education work report. Starting from rural primary and high schools, SIP has built a comprehensive system covering pre-schooling, basic, vocational, higher, social, international, and special education. There are at present 201 education institutions in the area, making SIP one of the first national pilot and model areas of education modernization. With rational allocation of quality resources, SIP has recorded 100% enrollment rates of pre-schooling and compulsory education for several years in a row, leading in the city in senior high and college entrance examinations. The authorities encourage each school to choose a theme PE activity to produce intelligent and healthy students. By following the recruitment policies of public selection procedures, competing for the teaching posts, and contracting the best, local schools emphasize career development of teachers and manage to gather top teaching staff.

Other initiatives include upgrading the compulsory education facilities, introducing corporate management mechanism to vocational schools, and promoting higher education with the support of government, following market rules, adopting modern management, and outsourcing supporting services to society. By subsidizing private preschool facilities, making comprehensive evaluation on school development, and putting school principals in overall management system, SIP has grown into a pioneer of education reform and development in Suzhou and Jiangsu.

Wang Xiang, Standing Committee Member of CPC Suzhou Municipal Committee and Secretary of CPC SIP Working Committee, reiterated at the meeting that the goal was to build a modern system of national education. "The task is to give people satisfactory education," he said. "This means we should improve education quality, promote equality and reasonably assign resources. Education is important to the improvement of livelihood. We should continuously improve the plans for education development so as to allocate education resources more reasonably; we should continuously promote reform so as to enhance the impetus of development; we should emphasize recruitment and retainment so as to continuously improve the quality of teachers."

Wang toured in the afternoon a group of new schools opening in 2014, including National University of Singapore (Suzhou) Research Institute, Xietang School, Xingzhou School, and Qizhi Greenland Kindergarten, talking to the management about school operation, staff and faculty, and curriculum.
