Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University Celebrates First Anniversary
Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University greeted its first anniversary on May 25, 2007 on the picturesque Dushu Lake shores, along with the opening of "Academic Forum on Internationalization of Education" on the campus. Invited to the celebrations were: Sir William Ehrman, British Ambassador to China, Prof. Bone, President of Liverpool University, UK, Jing Feng, Chief of Department for International Cooperation and Exchange under Ministry of Education, Prof. You Min, Vice-president of Xi'an Jiaotong University, Prof. Liu Chuansheng, Party Committee Secretary of Beijing Normal University, Academician Rao Zihe, President of Nankai University, Prof. Lin Jintong, President of Beijing Post and Telecommunication University, Yang Xiangning, Deputy Head of Provincial Bureau of Education, Zhu Yongxin, Vice-mayor of Suzhou, Bao Yinchu, Head of Suzhou Municipal Bureau of Education, and Pan Yunguan, Deputy Secretary of SIP Party Working Committee, etc.
At the celebration rally, President Tao Wenquan of Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University gave a brief account of the university. The school was set up with the approval of Ministry of Education in May 2006 as a brand-new internationalized independent university through cooperation between prestigious schools. The school started out with sciences and administration majors, and opened up such majors as communication engineering, computer science and technology to cater for the urgent domestic demands, and introduced into the school the advanced assurance and monitoring system for the quality of education. The teachers were sourced from all over the world, and the school initiated the interactive method of teaching in English in small classes with personal tutorship for each student. The enrollment will be extended this year to over 11 provinces and municipalities for a student body of 500 to 800. The university is devoted to building up a first-rate international school by training senior talents with global vision.
At the ceremony was announced the founding of "International Education Research Center", "Overseas Students Exchange Center", and "Energy and Power Research Center".
The school is planning to increase the number of students to 8,000 to 10,000 within 5 to 8 years, and to start up postgraduate education within two year.
