Samsung to Seek Global Supremacy From Suzhou Foothold
July 7, 2006 saw the commencement of construction of the second semiconductor plant of Samsung Electronics in SIP, a major step to seek global supremacy in semiconductor industry. The plant was officially opened for operation on May 7, and the celebration ceremony was attended by Wang Rong, Executive member of CPC Jiangsu Provincial Committee and Secretary of CPC Suzhou Municipal Committee, Wang Jinhua, Deputy Secretary of CPC Suzhou Municipal Committee and Secretary of SIP Party Working Committee, President and CEO Chang-Gyu Hwang of Korean HQ of Samsung Electronics, and President Park of Samsung (China) Co., etc. In his speech at the opening ceremony, Chang-Gyu Hwang said that Samsung aimed to be the largest semiconductor supplier in the world by 2009, and the completion of the second Samsung semiconductor plant in Suzhou would be a guarantee for the world leading position of Samsung in semiconductor market chiefly in the field of memory.
Samsung Electronics (Suzhou) Semiconductor Co., Ltd. was established in 1994 with huge investment, and has now grown into the most important overseas production base of Samsung with 4,000 employees and a workshop floorage of 250,000m2, Its total investment adding up to USD 600 million. Its mainstream products, DRAM, SRAM, and flash memory, rank the top of world market shares. In the first half of this year, Samsung will start producing MCP memory systems, which represent the highest semiconductor packaging technology in the world. The newly completed plant, 145,000m2 in land area, is expected to turn out 70 million DAR memories per month, and speed up the transfer of Samsung’s key manufacturing facilities from Korea to SIP.
So far, Samsung Corporation has invested in SIP 7 projects, namely, Samsung Electronics (Suzhou) Semiconductor Co., Ltd., Suzhou Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Suzhou Samsung LCD Co., Ltd., etc., and in addition, has set up R&D centers in these lines. Samsung Electronics, Suzhou Samsung Semiconductor, and Suzhou Samsung LCD are the only production bases of Samsung in China for household appliances, semiconductors, and LCD. Suzhou Samsung Computer Co., Ltd. mainly manufactures digital multimedia products, and the R&D Center in SIP is one of the four R&D centers for semiconductor, communication, software, and packaging design.
Wang Rong and other local leaders had a meeting with Chang-Gyu Hwang and his entourage from Samsung.
