Johnson & Johnson to Build largest Production Base in China
Johnson & Johnson Medical (Suzhou) Ltd., subsidiary of the the most comprehensive and globally deployed tycoon of medical and health equipment manufacturer, broke the ground for the construction of its production base in SIP on Sept. 13. The plant covers an area of 160,000 m2, and upon completion, the plant will be manufacturing medical appliances for the domestic and overseas market. The event marks another step forward in SIP’s plan to reinforce the medical and pharmaceutical industry. Mr. Yan Li, Mayor of Suzhou, announced at the foundation-laying ceremony that an agreement had been reached between the governments of China and Singapore to expand the SIP region by 10 kilometers2.
The initial stage of the Johnson & Johnson will call for US$47 million investment, and the project will be completed for operation by the end of 2007. The first to be manufactured will be appliances for joint replacement, trauma treatment, spinal repair, and other cases of sports medicine, in which field the products from Johnson & Johnson make up about 10-20% of the global production. These appliances will be supplied to the Chinese and overseas markets by the DePuy Brand. The company also disclosed that the product range of Suzhou base would be extended to other fields in the coming years.
