Fresh Steps in Suzhou's Service Industry
Deputies to National People's Congress from Suzhou conducted an investigation and study on the development of modern service industry in Suzhou on July 15, and Wang Rong, Member of Standing Committee of CPC Jiangsu Provincial Committee and Secretary of Suzhou Municipal Party Committee, participated in the study activity as an ordinary member of the National People's Congress.
In scientific approach to development, Suzhou Municipality has created a healthy and fast growth situation in the tertiary industry since the beginning of this year. In 2005, the added value of service industries amounted to 125.63 billion yuan RMB, increasing 16% over the year before. In the study and evaluation of Suzhou's service industry, Deputies Cao Fulong, Wang Fang, and Shi Kuang gave positive confirmation on the achievements made in service industry development, and raised suggestions and comments on the future development of service industry in Suzhou. It was held by all the Deputies that the Municipal Party Committee and Government should take the development of service industry as a breakthrough and make new strides in this sector.
At their discussion, Wang Rong pointed out that acceleration of service industries is a necessity as well as an important way to uplift the comprehensive competitiveness of Suzhou's economy, and fast growth in service sector must be maintained at a high level. He commented that the service sector was still relatively lagging behind the fast-growing manufacturing industries in Suzhou and its proportion in the GDP remained at a fairly low level. He required that breakthroughs must be made in the scale and coverage of service industries geared to production, and tourism should be further promoted and expanded to modern leisure, fitness building, sightseeing, and items demanded by the modern tourists.
On July 15, the group of Deputies made on-spot survey and investigation at China Pearl Town in Weitang Township, Dragon Pond Scenic Area in SND, Dushu Lake Higher Education Town of SIP, and Suzhou Logistics Center, then listened to the reports by Municipal Development Commission on the development of service industry.
