China’s First Hydrogen-powered Coach Made in Suzhou
At the Asian Exhibition of 2006 World Passenger Coach Exposition held in Shanghai International Expo Center, a hydrogen-powered battery coach stood out conspicuously from a dazzling array of new types of coaches, and attracted the attention of domestic and overseas manufacturers and distributors with 4 national patents. Being a key project of “No.863 national clean energy project”, the coach is the first of its type developed independently by a domestic coach manufacturer using hydrogen-powered battery, ready to be launched at market.
Initiated by Suzhou Chuang Yuan (Group) Co., Ltd. and Jointly developed and manufactured by Kinglong United Auto Industries (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. and other two enterprises, the passenger coach measures 11 meters in streamlined length with 35 comfortably arranged seats, and is equipped with 75-Kw battery-fueled engine system. The battery is the new generation of hydrogen-fueled high-safety, endurable battery 4 times higher than the proficiency in ordinary combustion engine. Another merit of the battery is that the exhaust is purified water completely free of pollution, and the matters in the reaction are purely hydrogen and oxygen, which can be recycled. The maximum speed of the coach is 75 kilometers per hour, and when fully fueled with hydrogen, the coach can cover 320 kilometers, with 4 kilos of hydrogen consumption per 100 kilometers. The testing report shows that this type of hydrogen-fueled coach has lived up to the international parameters of capabilities. The coach will soon be put on demonstration operation in the public transport line of Fengxian District, Shanghai.
Back in 1997, Suzhou Chuang Yuan Group made it a strategic R&D project to develop this new type of 21st century energy, and took 7 years to achieve the technological breakthrough. During the “10th 5-year plan”, the group gave all-out support to the newly emerging domestic hydrogen battery manufacturing enterprises in long-term cooperation, and applied for “No. 863 national fuel project” to develop the coach with in coordination with Shanghai Jiaotong University, Shanghai Shengli Technology Co., and Zhejiang University.
The sample coach exhibited at the exposition took only 3 months to be trial produced, which is another record speed in China. In the process, Chuang Yuan Group was responsible for electrical system, power distribution and control, auxiliary power and hydrogen storage device, Shanghai Shengli took charge of hydrogen battery development and assemblage, and Shanghai Jiaotong University conducted the final testing. The total investment in trial production is 4 million yuan RMB, about 1/5 of the cost for the same type of products overseas.
