Wang Rong Meets Leaders of Chinese and British Universities
Wang Rong, Secretary of CPC Suzhou Municipal Committee, met Wang Jianhua, Secretary of Party Committee of Xi'an Jiaotong University, and Drummond Bone, President of University of Liverpool, and their entourage on Oct. 15. Present at the meeting were municipal leaders Wang Jinhua and Wang Shaodong.
Wang Rong expressed thanks to Xi'an Jiaotong University and Liverpool University for selecting Suzhou as the site for the new university campus to be jointly set up by the two universities. He said that the two universities were experienced in running schools and that the jointly-run university will turn out high-quality graduates for the local economic development in Suzhou. He believed that there was much demand for higher education in Suzhou, an ancient city of cultural renown, and the joint efforts of the two prestigious universities in running a new school would doubtless lead to further uplifting of higher education in Suzhou. Wang also express readiness to provide first-class service for the two universities in an ideal environment.
Wang Jianhua and Mr. Bone told the host that the selection of location for their new school was finalized after surveys in many cities, and the reason for the final decision was that Suzhou displayed fast-growing economy, rational social structures, and many advantages. The two universities discussed relevant issues on running the new school and both sides felt confident about the prospect of training quality graduates for Suzhou.
Xi Jiao and Liverpool University (the tentative name for the school) under preparation is located in Dushu Higher Education Zone in the north of Suzhou Industrial Park. The project of cooperation was approved by Ministry of Education on Sept. 2, and has been in the stage of implementation ever since. In the light of the economic structure in the Yangtze delta region, the new school is to open environmental protection, software engineering, micro-electronics, business administration, and other majors highly demanded in the region. The teaching faculties will be recruited from both overseas and domestic sources. In the initial stage, the school will offer 4-year university program chiefly to students within the province, and 5 years later, the student body will grow to 8,000 to 10,000.
